He was dying and he knew it…
He never feared death, the only thing he feared was to leave his family alone, his beloved wife, his unborn child waiting for his time to join the family in a few months.
But now there was no family, no family anymore...
Lying on the grass, for a moment he noticed how luscious it was at that time of the year.
The sweet and sour smell of the fresh grass mixed with the strong odor of his blood made him cough.
Breathing was difficult, his stomach had been hit by an enemy’s spear and he had fallen on the ground, bleeding.
Removing the spear made the blood pour even more quickly and he could feel his life force running away with it.
The cries of the battle were far away from him; men kept on dying, falling on the ground while his brothers bravely resisted the attack of the Romans, but he was already far away from all of that.
His sight began to dim, becoming blurred.
He tried to look at the sky but all he could see was the face of his wife, dying… he couldn’t protect her… guilt, anger, sadness passed through his mind like clouds in the sky, swept away by the wind one after the other, leaving him hopeless and lonely as he faced the truth: he would never see her bright smile again and her eyes shining at the sight of her man, her husband, her companion, her everything… never again he would feel her soft touch on his skin, the sweet taste of her lips or hear her soft voice singing love songs for him…
